Maya Jayan | Clinical Psychology Registrar

Maya Jayan

Rosebery: Tuesdays and Thursdays

Hi, I’m Maya, a Registered Psychologist and Clinical Psychology Registrar. I chose to pursue psychology as I am deeply interested in people, the intricacy of their stories, and how these lead to profound effects on their lives. I believe that it is our rich tapestry of life experiences that interact with one another to create who we are, whether it be our strengths, behaviour patterns, or ways in which we view ourselves and the world.

As we go through everyday life, there are often many things that we leave unsaid or feel unable to put words to. It is always my goal to create a safe, sacred, and supportive space for your reflection and growth. It is my privilege to journey with you to gently and compassionately make sense of this web of past experiences, identify meaningful changes in line with your values, and find a path forward to a more fulfilling, enriching life.

My interests in psychology are wide-ranging, however my key areas of interest are complex trauma, family of origin concerns, self-esteem and identity, neurodivergence (including ADHD and Autism Spectrum experiences), LGBTQIA+ mental health, and minority experiences. I enjoy working across a diverse range of clinical presentations including mood and anxiety difficulties, obsessive-compulsive disorders, relationship challenges, life stressors and burnout, and chronic health conditions.

My main therapeutic approaches are:
●Schema Therapy (ST), which involves understanding how past experiences shape longstanding patterns of thinking and behaviour, as well as working to heal unmet emotional needs and strengthening healthy ways of coping.
●Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a humanistic approach that involves building psychological flexibility and self-compassion through acceptance of difficult emotions and taking values-aligned actions for the future.
● Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which involves gently challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours to better manage low mood, stress, anxiety, phobias, or OCD.
● Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), which involves building practical skills to better manage difficult emotions, relationship conflicts, and challenging situations.

While keeping these evidence-based frameworks in mind, I enjoy integrating aspects of different modalities to tailor a treatment plan that is best suited to your unique needs, as I believe that therapy looks different for everyone. Although diagnostic labels can sometimes be helpful, I prefer to take a holistic, person-centred, and strengths-based approach to understanding mental health and the unique facets of an individual beyond their difficulties.

I adopt a warm, collaborative, and reflective therapeutic stance, positioning you as the expert of your life and maintaining a culture- and trauma-informed lens. Through my undergraduate and postgraduate education and work across public and private health settings, I have had the honour of listening to and learning from a wide range of people and their experiences, and am struck repeatedly by the tenacity, resourcefulness, and adaptability of human beings.

I value authenticity, curiosity, radical compassion, unconditional positive regard, sincere connection, and lifelong learning in my work. I am committed to creating a hopeful space where you can feel seen, that is free from judgment, and is solely focused on your needs.
